Q: What is 'On Demand'?
On Demand means Proton when you want it. In the past when a show aired on Proton you could only listen to it at a scheduled time, the occasional rebroadcast, or if you were lucky enough to find a download of it later on. With On Demand you can listen to the latest broadcast from any Proton show whenever you want as well as archives from previous broadcasts!
Q: Does On Demand mean Download?
No. Subscribing to the service does not allow you to download every mix On Demand-- it allows you rather to stream the show just like you would listen to the normal Proton stream. When you tune into a mix you'll be able to start listening from the beginning.
Q: How do I sign up?
First you'll need to
register as a Proton member (free!) or
login with your existing account. Then, to become an On Demand subscriber, simply head over to the
subscription page and choose which type subscription you'd like.
After subscribing you can simply click on any of the play icons next to a mix to start listening. To see what shows are available, visit the
On Demand page.
Q: How do I listen?
Proton Radio's On Demand service works with iTunes, Winamp, Windows Media Player, and many other MP3 audio players.
Q: So I have to pay to subscribe?
Yes. Hosting all these mixes and the bandwidth to deliver them isn't cheap. Consider the price of a mix compilation: you get two hours of music for $10 at the very least. With Proton Radio On Demand you get practically unlimited exclusive mixes from the scenes top DJs spinning the latest music. The free stream is not going offline anytime in the near future, so if you do not want to subscribe you can still hear the music for free.
Q: I'm not a paying member. Will I still be able to listen to my favorite shows that are moving On Demand?
Yes, you can. New mixes from On Demand shows will be available first for paying members and then broadcasted on the free stream at unscheduled times a few weeks later.
Q: I am having trouble tuning in, what's wrong?
On Demand currently only supports playback in iTunes or WinAmp-- Windows Media Player & Real Player are not supported. A Flash player is in development for those who do not wish to use iTunes or Winamp.
Q: I can't pause, rewind, or fast forward! Why?
On Demand attempts to simulate a live broadcast of each show. Allowing pause, rewind, and fast forward makes the service less like a radio station and more like a download service. That said, iTunes and Winamp are unable to fastforward, rewind, or pause streaming media even if we wanted them to. The Flash player that is in development will potentially have such features, stay tuned.
