Things take a turn towards the tech in Opencloud's 3rd EP on Proton Music. Having explored progressive on 'Life' and various forms of breakbeat on 'Beneath the Earth', duo Corey Spengler and Blake Potter return to the label in perhaps their most surprising release to date.
The 'Golden Hour' occupies 50% of the listening experience here, with an Original and 'Still' mix. Trickling samples and lush pads build up the Original mix as the longest track on the release (9 minutes) unwinds itself as an opening track which can be likened to their 'Life' classic.
'Shark Repellent' is a direct descendent of the boys tougher works such as 'Autopilot' and 'Never' and is the first Opencloud tune to get the 'Techno' classification on Beatport's genre pages.
The peak time track here is 'The Funk Malfunction' which features vocals from both Corey & Blake-- listening to this one you'll get to hear the duo's banter from the creation process and then hear it woven into the actual fabric of the song in vintage OC humor. These guys have way too much fun writing this stuff.
Opencloud is the result of many years, relationships and long studio nights. Consisting of Corey Spengler and Blake Potter, Opencloud formed in the early fall of 2004. As two separate talents, Blake and Corey joined together to explore new territory for both of them and to push their music to its furthest reaching breaking point.
Blake began his journey into music at the tender age of 3 years old when his parents bought him a set of fisher-price drums. Then on his 6th birthday he dropped those fisher price drums and got a junior kit. Fast forward a year, Blake began taking an interest to the musical adventures of his Uncle Kevin and Father, Gene. Uncle Kevin, being an early pioneer of the Industrial / Techno sound in the mid-west, quickly influenced Blake with his unique taste of electronic music. One day Blake came home to find his sister rehearsing to a song Kevin had written. Kevin immediately asked him to play along on the drums. From that moment on, Blake fell in love with making music, and it never stopped. (read more)
